What is the “United Church Banff Men’s Conference Society?”

The first Banff Men’s Conference was held in 1955 under the sponsorship of the “Board of Men” as part of the Division of Mission in Canada. From 1959 to 1978, Fred Holberton, as Field Secretary for the Board of Men for Western Canada, provided the coordination and assistance to the Conference planning committees each year. In 1978, because the Board of Men was discontinued, a group of past general chairmen organized the “United Church Banff Men’s Conference Society” which was formally incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act in 1980, to ensure to the perpetuation of the Banff Conference and for ongoing coordination of the planning committees.

The Society’s purpose is to organize conferences to provide an opportunity for men to come to a deeper understanding of and commitment to God through Jesus Christ. The Society provides assistance to the planning committees by the selection of the General Chairman, by providing a manual for planning the Conference, by providing an advance of funds to cover initial expenditures, and by monitoring and assisting in the planning work. Much of this assistance is through the Executive Secretary who is a permanent part time resource engaged by the Society. The Executive Secretary works with and assists the planning committees. The United Church Banff Men’s Conference Society holds it annual general meeting on the Saturday afternoon of the Banff Conference weekend. All men who attend the Conference are automatically members of the Society and are cordially invited to attend the annual general meeting to learn more about the Banff Conference and to participate in the ongoing work of the Society. Bring your comments, criticisms and suggestions; complete the evaluation questionnaire, speak to the current year’s planning committee members; speak to the Society executive; ask questions, and offer to help!

May you feel the power of Christ in your life through the grace of God running through the men of Banff!
